Intel chief executive Lip-Bu Tan warned that the memory shortage battering PCs and smartphones could get even worse in 2027.
Speaking at the AI Infrastructure Summit in Santa Clara on 15 September, Tan said the industry had underestimated how serious the memory bottleneck would become.
âEarly last year, I said that âmemory would become a bottleneck.â Many people did not realise it back then, but as a result, I was right,â Tan said.

Micronâs Taiwan workers are threatening a strike unless the memory chipmaker agrees to permanent profit sharing as AI profits pile up.
According to Reuters, a Taiwanese union representing Micron Technology workers said it could move towards industrial action if the company fails to make a concrete proposal.
